Fighting Cock Bourbon Review

Fighting Cock Bourbon Review

Well today we reveal our final unranked bourbon that was part of the tasting to determine the Top 5 Budget Bourbons.  This one might turn some heads as it was a heavy favorite per the comments section of the original IG post.  This is yet another brand out of Heaven Hill Distillery in Fighting Cock 103 proof.  This was developed by Heaven Hill to be a competitor to Wild Turkey's 101 brand.  Bernie Lubbers, a brand ambassador for Heaven Hill, stated as much on a podcast with the comment that Heaven Hill likes to do things cheaper and better than competitors.  This is cheaper than Wild Turkey 101 but based on this tasting, may not be better.  This used to carry a 6 year age statement but was dropped quite a while back though the company states it still uses "older" barrels in the blend.

Stats: NAS (supposed 4-6 yr blend); 103 proof; 75% Corn 13% Rye 12% Malted Barley; $15

Verdict: Again, many people adore this bourbon and think of it as the King of bottom shelfers. This is where I reiterate for the 1492nd time that bourbon taste is subjective.  My tastings and Top 5 lists are meant solely as a guide and starting point and not "whiskey gospel."  I encourage you to do your own research...buy and try is the motto!  This one just didn't do it for me in the blind taste. A simplistic profile is to be expected at these price points and ages but this one was a bit too simple for me and bit too heavy on the spice side.
