Old Ezra 7 Year Full Proof Rye
Old Ezra 7 Year Full Proof Rye Review
Have you ever bought a bottle, put it on the shelf, and then totally forget you have it? No? Just me?? Ok, then...well here is one of those examples for me. I've had this for about two years when it was first released and just recently stumbled across it (insert too many bottles joke here). But man, am I glad I found it.
Background
Did you know the Ezra Brooks brand was created in the 1950's as a response to Jack Daniels being unable to keep up with demand for its product? Ezra Brooks is based on a fictional character, as well. Another interesting fact is that it was originally bottled in the same location as the Pappy Van Winkle brand. This Old Ezra 7 Year Old Rye was released in 2022 as the market for higher proof ryes began to expand.
Stats
7 year age statement; 114 proof; blend of 95/5 rye & 51% rye; $80
Taste
After nosing and sipping, my very first note that comes to mind is snickerdoodle cookies. And when I get that note on a rye, I know I'm going to love it. This is a nuanced pour with some underlying citrus, charred oak, and a subdued rye spice that isn't hidden but also not overpowering. What in the world was I doing not opening this sooner?!? I'll have to keep this as a staple in my bar from now on as it is fairly available in Kentucky without a lot of effort to find. I keep going back to that cinnamon, brown sugar, bready (snickerdoodle) combination that is absolutely the star of this bottle. Based on the notes, I would venture to say you would like this even if you're not a big "rye guy." The rye note is subdued enough because of the age that it won't overpower you. There's no more "heat" to this than a typical full proof bourbon and for that, you should definitely give it a try!
