Rebel 10 Year Review

Rebel 10 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon Review

When it comes to classic American bourbon, Rebel 10-year-old stands out as a true testament to tradition and craftsmanship.  With a history that dates back to the 1840s, this bourbon captures the essence of it's heritage while delivering a contemporary tasting experience.

Brand Background

Rebel, Formerly known as Rebel Yell, was originally created by the Stitzel-Weller distillery to celebrate it's 100th anniversary, with the help of former Louisville mayor, Charles Farnley who actually owned the brand and wanted to share it only with friends and family.  Being a Stitzel-Weller brand meant that it was originally, and still is, a wheated bourbon.   At the time, the name "Rebel Yell" paid homage to the Confederate war cry, a nod to the brand's Southern roots.  Today, Rebel is produced by Luxco, a company committed to preserving the rich history and quality that defines this bourbon. There is a note on the bottle that states this bourbon is "bottled for Luxco," likely meaning it is sourced from nearby Heaven Hill, sharing the same DNA as Larceny and Old Fitzgerald.

Stats

10 years old; 100 proof; Single Barrel (but consistent); 68% corn, 20% wheat, 12% malted barley

Tasting

The appearance showcases a deep rich amber color inviting you to explore it's depths.  The aroma is a delightful blend of caramel and vanilla, intertwined with decadent dark chocolate and beautiful rickhouse oak.  A slight hint of toasted nuts with a whisper of dried fruit promise a complex flavor profile.  The nose transitions directly to the palate with deep dark notes of initial caramel and vanilla give way to dark chocolate, oak, and then leather makes an appearance.  The finish is long and satisfying, leaving a warm, lingering aftertaste that begs you to go back for more.

Verdict

This is a bourbon that demands to be savored.  Its complexity and richness make it an excellent choice for both bourbon aficionados and those new to the world of aged spirits. This is one I like to call a "bourbon library" pour.  The notes make you feel like you're sitting in an old speakeasy with large leather chairs while smooth jazz plays in the background, surrounded by dim lights and cigar smoke.  However, you enjoy this bourbon, it's sure to impress you.
