Green River Full Proof Review

Brand Background

Green River Distilling Co., located in Owensboro, Kentucky, boasts a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century.  Founded by John W. McCulloch, the distillery gained fame for its high-quality spirits, and the iconic green riverboat logo became synonymous with excellence.  After a period of dormancy, the distillery was revitalized and continues to honor its legacy with a modern touch.

Stats

NAS (approx. 5 years old); 117.3 proof; 70% corn, 21% rye, 9% malted barley; $49

Tasting

The appearance displays a nice golden amber hue.  The initial aroma is vibrant graham crackers and caramel giving way to baking spices and toasted oak.  On the palate, there is an initial sweetness of caramel and bread which is quickly met with spice, pepper, and drying oak tannins.  A slight hint of tobacco makes it's way in briefly before the experience ends with a very long, warming, and spice filled finish.

Verdict

The full proof on the label of this pour is not lying - its full!  The is a bold, in-your-face pour that is not for the faint of heart.  It may be too much for those who don't prefer a spice forward (which could be perceived as "hot" or too much proof) or newbies just starting their journey. But if you like this type of pour and you love the nuances of mouthfeel, of which this one is fantastic, then you'd enjoy this wonderfully priced complex product from Green River.
