Remus Repeal Reserve VII
Remus Repeal Reserve VII Bourbon Review
This is probably one of the more underrated premium releases in the bourbon world…if such a thing even exists anymore. Remus Repeal Reserve is an annual, limited release by Ross & Squibb Distillery (previously known as MGP). It is typically a blend of multiple mashbills and multiple age bourbons at 100 proof. Unlike many other premium releases from big distilleries (very few are bigger by production volume than R&SD), you won't find this one flooding the secondary market or Reddit pages. Except for true whiskey enthusiasts, it kind of glides idly by the window of bourbon only to be snatched up by the smart few who know of its existence or those lucky enough to grab it on a whim.
The blend on this is very interesting. Obviously, MGP is known more for its Rye whiskey than bourbon and though this does classify as bourbon, it is made up of some "high-rye" mashbills. Here is the makeup:
6% 16-year-old 21% Rye
26% 10-year-old 21% Rye
21% 9-year-old 21% Rye
26% 10-year-old 36% Rye
21% 9-year-old 36% Rye
For those doing the math, that's an average age of 10 years old. You don't get 10-year-old MGP, ehh, Ross & Squibb every day, this is incredible.
As you begin to sip on this, you get prominent notes of black cherry, vanilla, maple syrup, and cardamom with a cinnamon and peppermint spice finish. First impression - I dig it. An easy drinker that’s like Fall in a glass! The baking spice and sweetness that is classic R&S rye flavors is enhanced through the age. The ending minty-spice note is uncommon for me and leaves a nice cleansing warmth on the palate. The additional high-aged oak undertone with maple syrup and cherries adds incredible balance. Despite some of the notes, it's very easy to sip on. You'll want to grab multiple of these if you see them for your outside Fall activities by the fire and through Winter for your holiday festivities. I can see this being an incredible Holiday Party pour for guests with its great baking spice and mint flavors!
